Memorial Garden
Belfast
Hall McKnight was commissioned in January 2012 to design a garden as a memorial to members of the Police Service of Northern Ireland who have died in service. The site is located within the grounds of the PSNI Headquarters in Belfast; a challenging campus–like context within which to create an appropriately peaceful and reflective setting for a memorial.
Enclosure of the space with a high timber screen evokes a sense of intimacy, and along with the retention of a mature copper beech, establishes the setting for a dark glass–clad pavilion where brass plates commemorate the officers who have lost their lives. The materials used are iroko, back–enamelled glass and Irish limestone.
The project was completed in November 2012 and has received an RIBA National Award.
